About

I am thought leader on human centred design methods; in academia and in practice. In academia I have a substantial track record of publications and often asked as external advisor for professor candidate selection or design curricula at other design schools. In practice, I am known as an advocate for human centred design. I developed the method contextmapping, which regards people as experts of their everyday experiences. In this expertise role they can contribute to design processes. Empathy and collaboration are key aspects in my design approach.

As a design practitioner, I conduct context research, generate insights and develop prototypes to support transition and innovation. The core of my approach is a genuine interest in the people themselves. I like to work with them, not for them. I believe that people are the experts of their own experiences and in that expertise role they can contribute to creating better systems, services, places and products in the world we live, play and work in.

Design research activities cover a wide range of methodologies (e.g. contextmapping, applied ethnography, home visits, in-depth interviews, facilitation of creative workshops, co-design processes, journey mapping, stakeholder mapping, iterative prototyping, scenarios, etc.)

I used to have a design research agency, but realized I prefer to focus on content instead of business. As an independent design researcher I regularly collaborate with other design and research agencies.

As a parttime associate professor service design at Delft University of Technology, I am happy I can contribute to research, education and development of Human Centered Design Methodologies.

As an editorial board member of Social ShowDown, I advocate for a close exchange between social design practice and design education. I aim to keep both worlds curious, critical and sharp.

As a human being I’m driven by an endless curiosity about the human experience, about what people feel, perceive, and what moves them.

That’s why I love my work so much and do what I do. Generating insights about people is fulfilling work, especially if these insights are well captured and communicated so others can see what drives people as well.

I am a passionate film lover, drawn especially to documentaries that reveal the complexity of how human beings interact. I love IFFR and am board member of SuikerZoet FilmFestival
